Baby Cot

The Musts for a Baby Cot

Every baby, if possible, should have his or her very own baby cot. Since your baby will pretty much spend most of his/her time sleeping in her early months and years, finding the perfect baby cot is a must.

Every baby cot should meet the minimum requirements set by safety code BS EN 716-1. But just to be sure, since this is the one place your baby will be spending roughly 16 hours a day, it would be best to double check its features.

First and foremost, your baby cot should be safe for your baby. There should be no sharp edges or any edible parts. There should also be no small objects that can be moved or easily detached. Aside from that, it should have a solid lock that wouldn’t allow your baby to accidentally fall off the cot and onto the floor. Since growing babies tend to move and put everything in their mouths, the crib’s slats should be no more than 6 centimeters and the cot should also have a teething railing to protect your baby from damaging his or her teeth when biting on the material. This is especially important when your baby is growing and begins to chew and put practically everything in their mouth.

Next to safety, you have to go for a cot’s adjustability. Bear in mind that your baby will be using the same cot for all her/his early years so opt for a baby cot wherein you can change the height. This will work as the child grows older and you would also get more value for your money. Cots that are not adjustable mean that you will soon have to be looking for a new cot as your baby grows older.

Aside from safety and adjustability, get a baby cot that is easy to operate. You don’t want to risk injury to you and your baby when you put your baby in his or her cot so purchase the type of cot where the gates can be lowered so that you don’t need to overstretch if you want to place your baby in the cot and also when you want to retrieve your baby out.

Here are some more features that make a baby cot the ideal one for you and your baby:

It would be better if you purchase a baby cot with rolling and lockable casters to make it easier for you to move the cot from one room to another. This would also make it more convenient when you are cleaning the area below the cot.

Also take note of the mattress that comes with your baby cot. It should provide a sturdy support that connects to the sides of the crib securely. The mattress should be a perfectly tight fit with no more than two fingers width between the crib side and the mattress.

Buying your own baby cot is imperative but if you decide to purchase a second-hand or hand me down cot, it should still provide a secure haven for your little boy or girl and provide you with peace of mind.
